“The OCA Foundation was set up couple of year back by a group of senior oncologists in Mumbai who were struggling to provide good cancer care to their patients.”

Providing appropriate and equitable healthcare is a problem for most countries in the world. Healthcare economics are a burden even in the developed countries. India with a population of 1.2 billion is unique with a wide variety of healthcare delivery models from private corporate hospitals to quacks and alternative therapy. With Indian government spending less than 1.6% of GDP on healthcare (mostly on salaries) 37 million Indian families go into debt every year due to healthcare costs. Every Indian including each of us will have to go through treatment for some disease or the other in our lives hence we are stakeholders in improving healthcare systems. The only model which is likely to provide reasonable equitable low-cost healthcare is a public private evidence-based treatment platform with constant economic surveys to bring down cost. Instead it is unfortunate that India has hospitals listed in the stock market where the suffering of a third world country has become a commodity.
